What to look for when hiring an event photographer

After the Covid pandemic, events have come back like never before. It’s important to capture those special moments at the event you’re planning. But how do you go about hiring a photographer? Here’s some tips.

Know their style

This is probably the most important thing. Each photographer has a unique style. Some might add a creative film look to their photographs, others might exclusively shoot in natural light without a flash. Personally, I edit my photographs very lightly, with the goal to help remember the event as it was.

Look at their website and at their social media. What you’ll see is ultimately what you’ll end up getting for your event. You might really like a photographer, but their style might not be a good fit. Don’t expect a photographer to change the way they photograph and edit images, as it’ll ultimately not turn out the way you had desired.

Talk to your network

If you’ve never worked with a photographer before, check with your network of colleagues. At least a few people have ultimately had experiences with photographers, and that might help you find the person you’re looking for.

Look at reviews

This is a no-brainer, but be sure to look at reviews on Google and Facebook. If a photographer doesn’t have any reviews, that might be a sign they’re not as experienced, or that they don’t value their client relationships.

But that’s not all — look at reviews to see the pros and cons of each photographer. Pay close attention to verbs in the reviews, too, as this can ultimately help you understand how the photographer works and what to expect.

Check out their websites

You’ll not only want to look at a photographers’ event work on their website, but you’ll also want to check out their entire portfolio. Look at their About page. See who they’ve worked with in the past, and see if you can get some references.

Know what you want

Ultimately, hiring a photographer comes down to what you’re looking for. If you can find a photographer with the style you desire, who’s reliable and can deliver photographs that capture the event the way you intended, you might just have found a photographer to work with.
