Five event venues you may not have thought of in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is full of places to host an event — from DeVos Place to the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. But what about those smaller, more unique venues? The ones that give your event a distinct personality, and the photos a little extra story to tell?

When I’m photographing corporate and community events, I’m drawn to spaces that have both character and flow — places where the architecture adds context, and the lighting helps me capture the energy of real moments. Here are five of my favorite venues around Grand Rapids that do just that — each one bringing its own style, scale, and personality to the table.

Venue Bella Giornata

We’ll start just outside Grand Rapids — down the road in Byron Center. Venue Bella Giornata is one of those places that instantly feels warm and inviting the moment you walk in. It’s modern and elegant, with high windows, exposed beams, and clean, neutral tones that photograph beautifully.

There are two main spaces: A front area that works great for a cocktail hour or networking reception, and a larger, more formal room for the main program. The natural light pours in through those tall windows, which makes everything from candid mingling shots to wide room setups glow. It’s polished without feeling stuffy — perfect for events that balance professionalism with comfort.

The Big Room at SILVA

SILVA might be better known as a restaurant and entertainment space, but its upstairs event area — called The Big Room — is quickly becoming one of my favorite new finds. It’s big, flexible, and full of personality — high ceilings, stained glass accents, and a moody modern vibe that can transform depending on how you light it.

Because it’s still relatively new, not everyone’s discovered it yet — but I’ve been impressed every time I’ve photographed there. The lighting setup and architecture give me plenty to play with. It’s the kind of space that can easily go from polished daytime seminar to high-energy evening event.

Grand Rapids Public Museum

Few venues in the city offer as much variety as the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Three floors of exhibits, riverfront views, and a downtown location that’s hard to beat.

I’ve photographed events here with buffets and entertainment spread across multiple levels, and guests love exploring — it turns the whole evening into an experience. You get candid photos of people discovering exhibits, laughing, and connecting in unique corners of the museum. Plus, the view from the upper floors looking out over the river makes for some fantastic wide shots.

If you have guests coming in from out of town, it’s an easy recommendation — it shows off a slice of Grand Rapids history while giving your event a memorable backdrop.

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park

Most people know Meijer Gardens for its incredible outdoor spaces and world-class sculptures. But it’s also home to several indoor event areas that work beautifully for corporate gatherings.

Whether it’s the main ballroom surrounded by glass or a more intimate room overlooking the gardens, the setting is always bright and inspiring. I love photographing here because it gives me a mix of architectural lines, greenery, and artwork to weave into the storytelling.

If you’re tired of the standard hotel ballroom, this is the perfect alternative.

The High Five

Right in the heart of downtown, The High Five offers a modern loft vibe that’s full of energy. Think exposed brick, big windows, and warm wood floors — all of which photograph incredibly well.

It’s a versatile venue with multiple floors and an open layout that’s easy to customize. I love using the natural light for those early-evening receptions, then layering in off-camera flash once the sun sets to keep the space vibrant. Whether it’s a company celebration or a more formal corporate program, The High Five brings that urban-chic feel that makes every shot pop.

Each of these venues offers something different — whether it’s industrial charm, garden serenity, museum character, or modern elegance. But what ties them together is how well they photograph. Great architecture, thoughtful lighting, and genuine moments — that’s what makes an event feel alive in pictures.

If you’re planning your next corporate or community event and want to make it memorable (and photogenic), these five are a great place to start.
